Love and the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict with Rabbi Greyber

Course Description:

Our conversations about Israel/Palestine will do little to change the Middle East, but they threaten the fabric of our community. Based on curricular materials from the Shalom Hartman Institute and on a close reading of chapters from Shai Held's book, Judaism is About Love, this five-session course with Rabbi Greyber will explore how different understandings of the Jewish value of "love" can serve as a basis for communal discourse around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Sessions will include discussions of the following chapters:
  • Learning to Love and Be Loved: The Family (Chapter 4) & Loving Our Neighbor: Judaism's "Great Principle," but What Does It Mean? (Chapter 5)
  • Loving Our Own, And Everyone Else Too: Judaism's Particularist Universalism (Chapter 6) & Human Dignity and Solidarity: Judaism's Other "Great Principle" (Chapter 7)
  • Loving the Stranger: The Bible's Moral Revolution (Chapter 8) & Must We Love Our Enemies Too? (Chapter 9)
